People who are physically, mentally or psychologically handicapped or are threatened with such handicaps are entitled to help and support. The handicap may be alleviated or eliminated by such measures, and the integration of handicapped people into society promoted.
As employees, people who are severely handicapped or similar enjoy special protection; e.g. against dismissal. As soon as the degree of your disability reaches 50%, you will receive a severely handicapped certificate (Schwerbehindertenausweis). This entitles you,to assert other claims; e.g. additional holiday time, free use of public transport or Income Tax relief. If, however, your degree of your disability is only 30% or 40%, you can apply for equivalence (Gleichstellung) from the Employment Agency.
You can apply for a a severely handicapped certificate at the Social Welfare Office, Fachbereich 3, in the Adminstrative District offices.
