What is an integration course?
Immigrants who want to work and live in Germany, must have the required language skills. As well as improving your language skills, you get to learn all about the German culture, society, history and legal system and practice dealing with administration and establishing contact with other people.

Course structure
The general language course is made up of an integration course with 600 contact hours and an rientation course with 100 contact hours. These end with the final exam “German test for immigrants“ and the test “Life in Germany“, which is also valid for citizenship.

There are also special integration courses available to women, parents, young people, as well as for people who are not able to read and write the European alphabet. These courses have 1000 contact hours.  If you learn particularly quickly, you can attend an intensive course. This has only 430 contact hours.

Prerequisites
All immigrants with permanent residence in Germany may take part. Refugees can attend an integration course after recognition of asylum. Asylum seekers from Iraq, Iran, Syria, Eritrea and Somalia can take up a course with just a temporary resident permit.

Costs
The integration course costs €1.95 per contact hour, the rest will be paid by the Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge (German Federal Office for Immigration and Refugees). If you receive Arbeitslosengeld II (Unemployment benefit II), welfare or asylum seeker benefits, then it is possible to have the whole cost covered by the Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge.
